Does my child need previous robotics experience?

No. Beginner Robotics is designed to welcome first-time engineers. New students begin with Level 1 foundations and receive direct, hands-on instruction in building, coding, testing, and problem-solving.

Can my child begin during winter or spring?

Accepted Answer

Yes. New engineers may begin during any session and will receive Level 1 instruction whenever they join. Returning engineers continue with activities that match their previous experience and readiness.

How is my child’s level determined?

Accepted Answer

Families will select their child’s level during registration based on previous robotics experience. New engineers begin at Level 1, engineers who have completed one previous session generally continue at Level 2, and experienced engineers who complete both fall and winter may be considered for Pre-Team during spring.

Do engineers work independently or with a partner?

Accepted Answer

Level 1 and Level 2 engineers may request to work independently or with one partner. Pre-Team engineers join an existing Competition Team of typically 4–6 members for a supported preview of the team experience.

Can my child continue Beginner Robotics without joining Competition Team?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Engineers who want to continue Beginner Robotics without applying for Competition Team may register for Level 2 or Pre-Team, depending on the experience that interests them most. The coach will work with each engineer to select activities that continue to challenge them and support new learning. Engineers may strengthen advanced building and coding skills, complete new activities, or work on missions using the competition mat—all without a full-year Competition Team commitment or team responsibilities.

Does completing Beginner Robotics guarantee Competition Team placement?

No. Beginner Robotics is the pathway to Competition Team—not a competitive tryout. Our goal is to welcome every age-eligible applicant who demonstrates teamwork, positive behavior, perseverance, and readiness for the full-year commitment. Engineers must complete at least one Beginner Robotics session before joining the team, but placement is based on demonstrated expectations and is not automatic.

Beginner Robotics meets once each week for one hour. Engineers participate in the program offered at the elementary school where they are enrolled.

Beginner Robotics is offered in three sessions throughout the school year. New engineers may begin during any session, while returning engineers continue with activities that match their experience and readiness. All levels learn together
